In early 2008, with the support of students from Yale University, we learned that the International Finance Corporation (IFC) had provided a US$ 55 million loan to NSEL, which together total $ 55 million dollars. With legal representation from the Center for International Environmental Law, we filed a complaint with the IFC’s Office of Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman to request mediation in beginning a dialogue with NSEL and a compliance audit.
In late 2008 under the auspices of CAO, ASOCHIVIDA and NSEL signed a Framework Agreement for Dialogue on Chronic Renal Failure. The objectives of the dialogue are to identify and address the causes of Chronic Kidney Disease and alleviate the plight of families affected by the disease.
However, despite these achievements, huge challenges loom ahead. Still every day, our children are sick from CKD with no knowledge of how they have developed this deadly disease. Research efforts need to be redoubled to end the suffering in our community at the hands of this devastating epidemic. Further, hard work is imperative toward advancing the implementation of other health and income-generating projects that were agreed to at the dialogue table, but have not yet advanced as hoped. We also need the continued support of NSEL and other donors. For more information on these projects.
