In early 2008, with the support of students from Yale University, we learned that the International Finance Corporation (IFC) had provided a US$ 55 million loan to NSEL, which together total $ 55 million dollars. With legal representation from the Center for International Environmental Law, we filed a complaint with the IFC’s Office of Compliance Advisor/Ombudsman to request mediation in beginning a dialogue with NSEL and a compliance audit.

In late 2008 under the auspices of CAO, ASOCHIVIDA and NSEL signed a Framework Agreement for Dialogue on Chronic Renal Failure. The objectives of the dialogue are to identify and address the causes of Chronic Kidney Disease and alleviate the plight of families affected by the disease.

Since then, we have convened twelve meetings of the dialogue table, and we are proud of its noteworthy achievements:

Together with NSEL, we selected Boston University School of Public Health among a pool of highly qualified applicants to conduct an official study to help determine the causes of CKD. This research initiative is an unprecedented step toward understanding the cause of CKD, given the high quality of the research team composed of both national and international professionals, the unrestricted access to all the labor and health records at NSEL, and ASOCHIVIDA and NSEL’s commitment to accepting the results. For more information on the status of Boston University’s research.

Additionally, as a result of the dialogue tables, we have obtained the following benefits for our members and families:

  • Since June 2009, NSEL has provided monthly food aid to ASOCHIVIDA members, helping over 2,000 families.
  • Since 2010, ASOCHIVIDA has had a micro credit fund of U.S. $ 100,000 donated by NSEL and managed by Nicaraguan NGO CEPRODEL, with the aim of encouraging small business development aimed to improve the financial situation of ASOCHIVIDA members and their families.
  • The Chichigalpa Health Center has received an ultrasound machine and a radiologist operates it once a week.
  • Children of ASOCHIVIDA members have benefited from supplies of more than 3,000 school bags with notebooks and pencils.

However, despite these achievements, huge challenges loom ahead. Still every day, our children are sick from CKD with no knowledge of how they have developed this deadly disease. Research efforts need to be redoubled to end the suffering in our community at the hands of this devastating epidemic. Further, hard work is imperative toward advancing the implementation of other health and income-generating projects that were agreed to at the dialogue table, but have not yet advanced as hoped. We also need the continued support of NSEL and other donors. For more information on these projects.
